Canada’s
Original “Canadian Idols” Perform June 1st, 2008, at the Saville Theatre.
Saskatoon, SK – May 9, 2008 – The acappella group HOJA (hoe-jah) will be performing at the Saville Theatre at the Spring Valley Guest Ranch near Ravenscrag SK.
This will be a return engagement for the group having performed previously at the Saville theatre to a very enthusiastic crowd nearly a year earlier.
In 1998, HOJA was formed by Saskatoon company Fat Cat Productions to give young performers the opportunity to tour nationwide in a professional vocal band. Auditions are held each year to select the best of the best that Canada has to offer, similar to the Canadian Idol phenomena that is currently sweeping the nation. Over the past 10 years, the HOJA project has allowed a total of twenty-five young singers to live their dream of being a professional performer. Drawing on the experience of veteran members and combining that with the fresh energy of talented new cast members, HOJA continues to deliver a performance filled with incredible harmonies, laughs, surprises and audience participation.
Current group members are Trent Funk from Maryfield, SK, Kirk DeHaven of Moose Jaw, SK, and Phil Eagle of Saskatoon, SK – its an all Saskatchewan cast this year!
Since 1998, HOJA has performed for more than 3000 audiences from British Columbia to Ontario. This upcoming show provides a great opportunity for HOJA fans to enjoy the new additions to their repertoire and new lineup for the 2007/2008 season.

Using only their voices, the talented members of HOJA are not just singing and harmonizing in the show, but also imitating various instrument sounds so that audiences are often convinced that there must be backup tracks playing along. In fact, every sound is created by the three singers live on stage. The show features great harmonies, energetic choreography, and HOJA’s unique sense of humour presented in an entertaining style that audiences of all ages enjoy. HOJA’s repertoire draws from the most popular and recognizable songs from the past 40 years from many different genre. Highlights include the Garth Brooks smash hit Friends in Low Places, Roy Orbison’s classic Pretty Woman, the Monkees I’m a Believer and acappella standard The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
What sets HOJA apart from other vocal bands is their commitment to being positive role models for Canadian youth. The group performs at nearly 300 schools per year, demonstrating their unique style of acappella and teaching students how to make instrument sounds with their voices. The singers also encourage students to seek out their passion and to work hard at pursuing their dreams. To quote Leta Youck-Mcgowan from Calgary regarding HOJA’s school performances: “HOJA offers impressive vocal technique, positive audience rapport, abundant energy and an inspiring message that promotes youth resiliency and hope.”
Regarding their public performances, Tim Koral from Colonsay, SK, recently had this to say: “HOJA’s talent along with their charisma and their ability to work the crowd and relate to their audience clinched their success at our event. Never have I observed entertainers appeal to so many at the same performance. Right from the toddlers dancing in the aisles tot he 80 year old curmudgeons wiping tears of laughter from their eyes have I witnessed an audience so content and involved”
